Skin cancer surgery is the most effective way to remove cancerous skin cells and prevent recurrence. It's commonly used for all major types of skin cancer, including: Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) Melanoma Rare types like Merkel Cell Carcinoma ⚙️ Common Surgical Options 1. Excisional Surgery Best for: BCC, SCC, early melanoma. The tumor and a margin of healthy skin are cut out. Sent to a lab to confirm if all cancer was removed. Usually performed with local anesthesia. 2. Mohs Micrographic Surgery Best for: BCC or SCC on the face, hands, or other sensitive areas. Cancer is removed layer by layer and examined microscopically until no cancer remains. Most precise with the highest cure rate (~99% for BCC). Preserves as much healthy tissue as possible. 3. Curettage and Electrodessication Best for: Superficial BCC or SCC in situ. Tumor is scraped off and base is cauterized. Fast, simple, but less precise; higher risk of recurrence. 4. Wide Local Excision Best for: Melanoma. Tumor is removed with a wider margin (1–2 cm). May be combined with sentinel lymph node biopsy if the melanoma is deeper. 5. Lymph Node Surgery Used for: Melanoma or advanced SCC that may have spread. Involves removing lymph nodes near the cancer site to check for metastasis. 6. Reconstructive Surgery If a large area is removed (especially from the face), skin grafts or local flaps may be needed to close the wound and improve cosmetic outcome.
