Description

Intestinal cancer refers to cancer that begins in the small or large intestine. It includes several of *Colorectal Cancer (Large Intestine) *Small Intestine Cancer Surgery is often the primary treatment for intestinal cancers—especially when detected early. The type and extent of surgery depend on the location (small vs. large intestine), type of cancer, and stage. 📍 1. Colorectal (Large Intestine) Cancer Surgery a. Polypectomy / Local Excision Used in very early-stage cancers (confined to a polyp). Performed during a colonoscopy using a snare or laser. b. Colectomy (Colon Resection) Standard treatment for colon cancer. The surgeon removes part of the colon containing the tumor, plus some healthy tissue and nearby lymph nodes. Types: Right hemicolectomy – for cancer in the ascending colon Left hemicolectomy – for descending colon tumors Sigmoid colectomy – for sigmoid colon Total colectomy – entire colon is removed (rare) Reconnection (Anastomosis) is done to restore bowel continuity. If not possible immediately, a temporary or permanent colostomy (stoma) may be needed. c. Low Anterior Resection (LAR) Used for rectal cancers in the upper/mid rectum. Preserves the anus; often requires a temporary ileostomy. d. Abdominoperineal Resection (APR) For low rectal tumors near the anus. Removes the rectum and anus, requiring a permanent colostomy. 📍 2. Small Intestine Cancer Surgery a. Segmental Resection (Small Bowel Resection) Removes the affected section of the small intestine with nearby lymph nodes. Bowel is reconnected unless disease spread prevents it. b. Whipple Procedure (Pancreaticoduodenectomy) Used if the tumor is in the duodenum (first part of small intestine), especially near the pancreas. Very complex—removes part of the pancreas, duodenum, bile duct, and sometimes stomach. For Consultation Contact Dr Sarveshwar Reddy
